The OBD2 port is a mature and well-defined interface able to support a wide range of connected car services via a self-install device. But building a business based on such devices poses engineering and commercial challenges, from data collection, through security, to application development and data management. There are a number of emerging players with distinct but overlapping strategies, though none can yet be said to have taken a commanding lead. This Research Note describes the approach taken by Zubie, an aggressive and potentially disruptive player aiming to enter the connected automobile space via the OBD2 port.
