Over the course of the last few years a number of publicly funded initiatives have been implemented in countries around the world aimed at cultivating IoT and smart cities, including several parallel initiatives in the UK.

This Research Note evaluates the work of the UK Future Cities Catapult, one of a number of centres established by the government-funded Innovate UK to catalyze knowledge transfer and collaboration between academics, start-ups, established businesses and other agencies. It describes the skills sets contained within the Catapult as well as some of the programs it carries out, and explains its operating model.
