Over the past 18 months, Low Power Wide Area (LPWA) networking technologies have emerged from the shadows and are now front stage and centre: Sigfox recently announced a USD115 million round of funding, Neul was acquired by Huawei in late 2014, and a new alliance of major technology players has catalysed around Semtech’s LoRa technology. This is a sub-sector that is on fire. We forecast that by 2022, there will be over 3 billion LPWA M2M connections, more than cellular . This Research Note examines the effect LPWA will have on the competitive landscape, and how the emerging plethora of LPWA technologies will compete with each other.
