This Research Note examines proposals to use the peer-to-peer (P2P) Blockchain architecture embodied in the cryptocurrency Bitcoin to manage devices and data within the Internet of Things (IoT). There are several such proposals extant at present and much interest from mainstream technology players, financial backers and start-ups. However, the benefits that might result from such an approach are not clear, and there is much confusion about the differences between a P2P application architecture, a decentralized business model, and a mesh topology communications network.
