In 2014 Machina Research inaugurated its M2M and IoT Regulation Database, based on an initial tranche of interviews with regulators around the world. One of the key issues tackled was data ownership and sovereignty, with reference to how it affects the support of M2M and IoT implementations. This Research Note examines the results of our discussions with regulators on the topic. It also examines in some depth the European Union (EU) General Data Protection Regulation which was enshrined in law in March 2014 and will become applicable within the next two years. The Regulation’s new rules directly and immediately apply to all 500 million EU citizens as well as any company doing business in the region. It is hard to see how any significant M2M, IoT or Big Data player in the world would not be affected in some way.
