The requirements for M2M connectivity vary with the application but are often very different from the voice and data applications for which most telecom services are designed. Historically, there have been a number of applications, such as process control, which have used medium range or field-area communications and these are being connected to the wide area to become M2M applications, while new applications are leading to the development of new medium-range technologies. Application developers need to identify the technologies best suited to their application.
