Over the next ten years mobile network operators will have to make some difficult decisions about rationalising their network technologies; most specifically, whether to switch off 2G networks and focus on 3G and 4G or whether to switch off 3G and focus on 2G and 4G. These choices will have significant implications for M2M. This Research Note examines the drivers for and implications of potential 2G (and 3G) network switch-off, the impact on M2M and the best strategies that MNOs can implement in order to minimize the impact of any rationalisation.
