iOnRoad is a smartphone application that makes use of the device’s camera and local processing power, combined with sophisticated computer vision software, to deliver a proposition comparable to that offered by in-car systems designed to support Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). It illustrates the potential for mass-market devices to be used to support connected car services in the absence of an embedded vehicle platform. This Research Note examines the iOnRoad proposition and the underlying business model, and considers its implications as part of a new generation of smartphone-only smarter car applications.
