DropTag is a cheap peripheral device designed to be used in conjunction with a driver’s smartphone so as to provide cloud-based services in a number of automotive applications. It extends the capabilities of smartphones, allowing them to address more of the market that has hitherto been restricted to dedicated telematics devices and might have been expected to be the domain of embedded vehicle platforms. This Research Note examines the DropTag proposition and examines the implications of smarter peripherals for the connected car.
