Clinical Remote Monitoring: critical tools to ensure treatment compliance
This Application Spotlight provides a qualitative and quantitative analysis of the M2M market related to Clinical Remote Monitoring. In this report we address all forms of remote monitoring of patients where the monitoring takes place as part of a programme of treatment under the guidance of a clinician. It includes connected devices used in, for example:
- pulmonary conditions such as connected continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machines used to treat sleep apnoea and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) as well as inhalers and spirometers to treat and diagnose asthma and other long diseases.
- cardiac conditions such as connected heart-rate monitors as well as remote monitoring and maintenance of implanted cardiac devices such as pacemakers and implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs)
- diabetes monitoring such as connected blood strip readers and continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) devices.
Clinical monitoring is, in general, motivated by healthcare professionals’ desire to monitor patients who are already suffering, or at risk of suffering, certain identified medical conditions. We count clinical remote monitoring as a distinct application to Worried Well health monitoring, which is, in contrast, motivated by a personal desire to be healthier in general.
As technology advances, we expect that remote monitoring will increasingly be ‘prescribed’ on a pre-emptive basis to people who are otherwise well, but are judged to be at increased risk of suffering certain diseases, often well in advance of any potential acute event. We class such use-cases as Clinical Remote Monitoring given the attendant clinical-grade technical, performance and commercial risk implications.
