Audio visual sources include a range of fixed multimedia devices without built-in screens intended for accessing on-line content. The categories of the devices included in this report as follows:

  • Video sources – this includes traditional media sources such as Blu-ray players, DVD players or PVRs that have been augmented with network capabilities in addition to internet set top boxes (STBs), home media centres and media streaming USB sticks.
  • Audio sources – similarly to video sources, many fixed audio players now have an additional capacity to connect to online services included. Other products adapt existing non-connected systems to allow users to listen to online content. This section also includes a growing number of products that have been designed specifically to stream audio from online sources as their principal role.
  • High end AV devices – these products are part of a hi-fi niche within the AV sources market and are typically characterized by higher costs, greater quality of components and improved audio fidelity.
  • Fixed gaming consoles – non-portable consoles, that connect to a separate display and are network capable, example products include Nintendo’s Wii U, Microsoft’s Xbox One and Sony’s PlayStation 4.
