The recent flurry of 5G-related press releases and marketing announcements has raised awareness of the coming next generation of mobile networks, but will likely also cause confusion in the market as these trials and deployments will utilize pre-standard equipment at both a radio access network (RAN) and a core network level. This portends a likely repeat of the marketing confusion witnessed in major markets during the early days of LTE deployments and claims of 4G capabilities.

This Research Note examines the impact that 5G networks and their projected capabilities will have on the IoT ecosystem and the competitive positioning of MNOs therein.
