White Paper – The critical role of connectivity platforms in M2M and IoT application enablement

17 June 2014

The Internet of Things has already had a significant impact on the M2M platforms industry, resulting in the emergence of a new type of platform: the M2M/IoT Application Platform. A new Viewpoint from Machina Research, the leading providers of strategic market intelligence on the M2M, IoT and Big Data markets, explores how the advent of the IoT will impact a seemingly more mundane aspect of the connected future: the provision of connectivity.

Machina Research has identified twelve technical and commercial capabilities and features which establish ‘best practice’ for connectivity support platforms in the age of the Internet of Things. We expect these ‘best practices’ to reflect the changes in connectivity requirements from MNOs, MVNOs, connectivity technology providers, and/or other M2M/IoT platform providers in the Internet of Things.

Commenting on the findings, report author Emil Berthelsen said: "Ultimately pursuit of best practice for a connectivity support platform will result in some players repositioning as a ‘Connectivity Platform’: actually providing connectivity, rather than simply supporting it."

Referring to the impact to the M2M platforms marketplace Berthelsen commented: "Mobile connectivity focused platform providers such as Ericsson, Jasper Technologies and Stream Technologies will begin to encounter these changing requirements, and those adapting the quickest may reap the benefits of a competitive advantage in this growing market space."
