On 3rd June 2013 Machina Research hosted a webinar on the subject of Low Power Wide Area networks and their impact on the world of M2M.
The names SigFox, Weightless and OnRamp are increasingly often heard in M2M circles. Together these three technologies represent an emerging category of Low Power Wide Area (LPWA) wireless networks, specifically designed to support M2M applications.
Wireless networking is always a trade-off between power consumption, traffic speeds and cost. The calling card of these emerging LPWA technologies is that they typically significantly compromise traffic speeds in return for lower costs and longer battery life.
The theory is: Why use a Lamborghini when a Skoda is just fine? And the fact is that, in many cases in M2M, that Skoda would be just fine.
But what is the true potential market for these Low Power Wide Area wireless solutions?
In this webinar we focused on three critical aspects of LPWA technologies:
- What is the total market opportunity for LPWA technologies?
- What are the key differences between the main contenders in this space, both in terms of technical capabilities and go-to-market strategies?
- How should existing M2M ecosystems respond to these emerging technologies?
