New Carbon Trust report highlights positive impact of mobile technology on carbon emissions
According to a new report from the Carbon Trust, supported by Machina Research, mobile technology accounts for a 180 million tonne saving in carbon emissions annually. The GeSI Mobile Carbon Impact report released by the Global e-Sustainability Initiative (GeSI), authored by the Carbon Trust found that mobile networks generated a five-fold benefit in terms of reducing carbon emissions, a figure that is set to increase by a factor of three over the next five years.
Some of the benefits are as a result of the smartphone revolution, changing user behaviour and driving greater productivity. However, the greatest potential savings are identified as being in IoT sectors such as agriculture, smart grid and connected vehicles, where there will be a direct impact on reducing emissions.
Machina Research was the supporting analyst partner for the study, providing quantitative assessments of the growth of different IoT segments and identifying the impact of these initiatives.
